Tomorrow is super Tuesday. If your state has a primary or caucus be sure to go and take part.

Also, I have a poem in the new Real Eight View. It is called Tragic Engine

Nathan Tyree: Obama, Clinton, John
Last night HRC and Obama played nice. There’s a lot of talk this morning of a Clinton-Obama ticket. I don’t see that. Maybe it could play the other way around? I think that either of them needs a white male southerner as their running mate in order to shore up support in those big southern states. Right now Obama is in the lead. He has the most delegates( 70 to 58). He’s also positioned to pick up more of Edwards’ supporters than HRC does. Plus, he must picked up the Kennedy endorsements.

In CA, by the way, it is now withing the margin of error.

I think Obama is the nominee.

Over in the Grim Old Party it looks like McCain has come back from the dead and is now the candidate to beat.

In personal news: I have to drive to fucking Franklin to Caucus. What the fuck. I don’t even know where Franklin is. Kansas is really pissing me off. We should be a primary state. This move to a Caucus (I believe) was designed to suppress voter turn out. It’s going to work, too.

And now a word from our sponsor:

Poor Mojo’s Almanac(k) is going to publish “And Still We Fell” soon. I like PMJA (that’s what the kids are calling it these days). You may recall that they took my “Notes Toward a Unified Philosophy”, which is such an experimental piece that I worried about it ever finding a home. This new story is less experimental, but a tough sale nonetheless. It takes a ‘zine with stones to want it.

Nathan Tyree: Debates, Absinthe, Cheese

The debates last night were fascinating. On the Dem side Edwards clearly won, but the victory may well have been, largely, pyrrhic . Edwards beat Clinton, but failed to really engage Obama. Hillary imploded on that stage. While Edwards and Obama seemed likable, passionate and involved, she seemed bitter and mean spirited and (most troubling) to be against hope. She actually said something about not raising the hopes of voters about what could be accomplished. Obama did exactly what he needed to do: he avoided making major mistakes and looked presidential.

I’m predicting that Obama wins New Hampshire and Edwards picks off enough of Hillary’s votes to make second place a coin toss again. Obama’s win will be impressive. Double digits.

On the Republican side McCain destroyed Romney. McCain came across as sharp, quick and witty. He showed himself to be a hell of a pugilist. Romney seemed rehearsed, smarmy, and sort of dumb. Romney is going to lose New Hampshire in a big way, and will likely be totally hamstrung by that loss. Huckabee will come in third, but have a better showing than most people expect. That leaves McCain and Huckabee as the contenders. Rudy’s strategy of waiting for Florida to start fighting seems more like a disastrously bad idea with each passing day.

On a side note: on the Republican stage the smartest, most interesting candidate was Ron Paul. It’s a shame that he is crazy as a bag of weasels and despised within his own party. He barely counts as an also ran despite his stunning ability to raise money.

In totally unrelated news Absinthe is now legal in the United States. This is wonderful news. Absinthe is one of my favorite drinks, and it has always been very difficult to obtain. Now I will be able to walk into a liquor store and buy it. Vive Le Muse Verte!

Nathan Tyree: Iowa
Obama won Iowa. He just win, he got a relative landslide. He managed great numbers in a conservative state that is all white (95% white, anyway). I suppose this should dispense with questions of electability.

Edwards, who was supposed to come in third, should get a little bounce from his second place finish. I wouldn’t count Hillary out, though. Remember that the last Clinton to run for president lost Iowa and New Hampshire, but got the nomination anyway.

Biden has dropped out. I suspect we will see another candidate drop out soon.

Over on the Republican side Huckabee won. Many are surprised; I am not. Iowa is a state in which the G.O.P is dominated by Evangelicals. The real shock is that McCain did as well as he did. Now he needs to position himself as a “comeback kid”.
