Nathan Tyree: Super Obama Galaxy
This election cycle is strange. It’s much longer than is normal, which has completely altered the dynamics in play. In any other election year each party would have a clear front runner by the time Iowa came around. This year that isn’t the case.

On the Democratic side it seems to be a coin toss between Obama and Clinton. The latest polls show that in Iowa Obama is ahead, but his lead is within the margin of error.

In other news: Super Mario Galaxy is the video game equivalent of crack. Days vanish in a haze because of this evil, evil game. I now dream of bouncing over planets collecting star bits and searching for grand stars.

Nathan Tyree: Simpsons Eastern Promises (some spoilers)

Last night I watched The Simpsons Movie and Eastern Promises (the most recent film from David Cronenberg). Those two films back to back create a strange, almost surreal juxtaposition. The Simpsons is, of course, irreverent and funny. E.P. is dark and strange. With this follow up to A History of Violence Cronenberg has again decided to swim in the seas of reality. Those familiar with his work know that normally he plays in body horror, the surreal and strange existential themes. Some of those themes come into play here, but in a very grounded way.

Oddly, the two films have one thing in common

Spoiler Alert

Both films feature full frontal male nudity. Honestly, it was much more disturbing in The Simpsons than in the Cronenberg flick.

I recommend both films, but for very different reasons.

Nathan Tyree: The wonderful vanishment

For months now I’ve been plagued by terrible dreams. I haven’t slept in weeks. Really slept, I mean. I can get maybe 40 minutes at a time, then the terror is back. I have died a thousand lovely deaths in my sleep. I’ve been drowned; torn apart by an animal I couldn’t identify; run down by a car; shot; stabbed; hanged; bludgeoned; decapitated; shot by my father; impaled on a iron spike by a neighbor who was angry that I may have coveted his collection of gourmet cheeses; suffocated by a friend; thrown from a building; forced into a giant paper shredder; and so many more. If it is fatal, I have experienced it.

Anyway, all I wanted to say was: I can’t sleep. The not sleeping isn’t the worst of it. It’s a start, though..

Nathan Tyree: Blade Runner
I have now seen (I believe) every version of Bladerunner that is extant. The new Final Cut is perfect. Scott says that this is THE definitive version of the film and I see why. The Director’ Cut is still quite worthwhile as well. I recommend seeing the workprint version at least once, as it contains some elements that are not in any of the other versions. The opening of the workprint is entirely different
