Nathan Tyree: Blade Runner
This is all I want for christmas: Blade Runner.

I am quite excited about this. Blade Runner is one of my favorite films. It’s about time Ridley Scott did a definitive director’s cut. Plus, I have wanted to see the work print version for years.

In other news: The Real Eight Review is taking a poem of mine called “Tragic Engine”.

Nathan Tyree: The Ice Storm

The ice storm hit us hard. The power went out Saturday night (the 8th) and was not restored until late Thursday night (the 13th). The temperature was bitter and staying warm was the top priority. In the aftermath I’ve had time to survey the damage. My yard looks like a labyrinth of tree limbs. Nearly every tree on our property was lost or at least badly damaged. One of these trees was huge: 70 or 80 feet high, and stunningly beautiful. It is now half it’s former height and limbless.

My father’s place of employment is still without electricity.

The vet clinic where Sarah works went almost a week without power and to makes matters worse lost water service as well. They had to haul in bottled water for the animals.

The day the power came back on my parent’s dog, Angie, had a stroke. She did not recover and had to be put down t he next morning. They have been a bit of a mess since.

So far December sucks.

Nathan Tyree: His Dark Materials

The Golden Compass opens this weekend. I hope to have time to see it. There are likely to be protests and such, which is an idiotic way to react to a movie. People should lighten up. The books are intelligent and fun. The movies will likely be the same.

In other, more personal news, I got a new guitar. I’m trying to practice for at least an hour every night. Last night it was nothing but scales. I have got to toughen up my finger tips.

That is all.

Nathan Tyree: Sailing to Byzantium

When I initially heard that there was to be a film of No Country for Old Men I was dubious. The book is one of my favorite novels and it isn’t really the sort of thing that one expects Hollywood to handle well. It’s strange and bleak and has an odd structure that couldn’t easily be shoehorned into three tidy acts.

When I learned that the Coen Brothers would be doing the film my outlook brightened up. This is definitely the territory of the minds behind Blood Simple, Fargo and The Man Who Wasn’t There.

I saw the film this weekend. I was not disappointed. No Country for Old Men is the best film I’ve seen this year. It stays very true to the book. The tone is perfect. The cast is extraordinary. Josh Brolin was impressive as Moss. Javier Bardem perfectly embodies Anton Chigurh (who has eclipsed Harry Roat from Scarsdale as the most frightful screen villain of all time). Tommy Lee Jones is the center of the film. His Ed Tom is beat, tired and old. He should get the oscar for his performance.

The smaller roles are well cast as well. Kelly Macdonald is just right as Moss’ wife. Woody Harrelson finds the right balance for Wells. Stephen Root is quickly becoming the most versatile actor in the movies.

I love this film. I cannot recommend it enough.
