Nathan Tyree: No country for old men
“Aint this a mess sheriff?â€Â
“If it aint it’ll do ‘till a mess gets hereâ€Â
I admit that I am a fan of Cormac McCarthy. His books Blood Meridian, The Road and All the Pretty Horses are American classics. He ranks, in my mind, with Melville Faulkner and Steinbeck among novelists. His books have won many awards including the National Book Award and The Pulitzer Prize.
I believe that his finest novel is No Country for Old Men. It’s a tale of almost unbearable violence told against a beautiful and earthy backdrop of the Texas-Mexico border and set sometime in the 1980s. I don’t want to write about the details of the plot or the prose, but rather I want to speak of the title.
I’ve been rolling this over in my head and I can’t quite figure it out. I see two possible interpretations of “No country for old men†and can’t figure out which is correct (if either is).
1. (This is) no country for old men.
2. (There is) no country for old men.
If anyone else here has read the book please speak up. Which ?
