Nathan Tyree: Studio 60
I had not planned to watch Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip. The ads for the show did not interest me at all. The damn thing had one of those actors from Friends in it, which was enough to quash any curiosity that I could have had.
Then, flipping through channels, I stumbled upon Judd Hirsch doing a Network like rant. This, I thought, could be interesting. Ripping off Paddy Chayefsky is always a good idea. I didn’t know what the show was yet, just that the scene I was watching had caught my attention.
By the time I realized that it was Studio 60, they were already acknowledging the debt to Network, and transcending it. I was hooked. This show was clever, funny, entertaining and best of all, seemed to embody NBC admitting that Saturday Night Live (once the jewel in their crown) had turned to shit.
Last night the final episode ran. I didn’t want the show to go on for nine years. I hate it when a good show gets run into the ground. I would have liked three seasons or so. It’s sad that something that smart and funny couldn’t find an audience. God knows Age of Love will have no trouble finding a big audience.
