Nathan Tyree: Mail

The first time I ever received fan mail (fan email, really) was a couple of years ago. It was the strangest thrill to get a note from a stranger telling me that not only had they read something I wrote, but that they had really liked it. The first one is always the best one.

After that first missive I had to wait a while, but eventually I got another note from the underground. Then another. At this point there is rarely a week that passes without at least one little note from someone who enjoyed something I wrote.

What surprises me is what they write to comment on. Sure, about 60% of the correspondents want to talk about Mr. Overby is Falling, but the other 40% are interested in something else. I get letters about Twisted Sisters, a funny essay I wrote a few years ago. Just this weekend I got a letter that referenced Cigarette Burns. They actually mentioned that they had read it in Coffee Faucet where it was first published back in 2003. Since then the story has been reprinted in Dogmatika.

Anyway, I’m rambling. I just wanted to mention that I really enjoy fan mail.

Notes Toward a Unified Philosophy and The Alchemist's Son are up on Edifice Wrecked.

These are both highly experimental pieces and I'm glad they found such a good home. What I like best about EW is that all subs are read blind: the editors don't know who wrote them. That means that it is only the quality that gets measured. Tom Wolfe's name matters no more than mine there.
