Nathan Tyree: The Ice Storm
The ice storm hit us hard. The power went out Saturday night (the 8th) and was not restored until late Thursday night (the 13th). The temperature was bitter and staying warm was the top priority. In the aftermath I’ve had time to survey the damage. My yard looks like a labyrinth of tree limbs. Nearly every tree on our property was lost or at least badly damaged. One of these trees was huge: 70 or 80 feet high, and stunningly beautiful. It is now half it’s former height and limbless.
My father’s place of employment is still without electricity.
The vet clinic where Sarah works went almost a week without power and to makes matters worse lost water service as well. They had to haul in bottled water for the animals.
The day the power came back on my parent’s dog, Angie, had a stroke. She did not recover and had to be put down t he next morning. They have been a bit of a mess since.
So far December sucks.
