Nathan Tyree: The Road
The best book I have read so far this year is The Road by Cormac McCarthy. McCarthy is known for his florid, dense, difficult prose (read Blood Meridian or No Country for Old Men to see what I mean). In this new book he shifts stylistic gears. He has moved into a staccato, rough hewn brand of writing that is exquisite, and beautiful but almost broken.

The Road is a post-apocalyptic tale of survival, and yet manages to be something greater. McCarthy weaves the tale of a father and son in peril in a way that is at once terrifying and hauntingly beautiful.

The book is a bit like having your guts ripped out and force fed to you. If you haven’t yet, read The Road.
