I think any remake is a bad idea, but this one especially.

Wow - way to ruin a legendary piece of cinema yet again. Thanks, Hollywood.

I would say that those were "inspired by" and not remakes. Certainly they share many plot points, with the Samurai films, but those in turn share many plot points with earlier legends and stories.

Hell, you could say Super Mario Bros. is a remake of a Samurai film.

In the case of Fistful of Dollars/ Yojimbo, one could argue that the Kurosawa film was just the “inspiration” for Leone’s masterpiece, but with Magnificent Seven/ Seven Samurai that’s harder to do. The plots are identical. The characters are very much much the same. Only the locale differs. I’m pretty sure that those responsible for MS were open about the fact that they were doing a re-make of the earlier film.

Of course, there are others I could name (re-makes that are good, I mean). I always enjoy doing a triple feature of Blow Up/ The Conversation/ Blow Out.
