Nathan Tyree: American McCain

John McCain has a new ad out. It may well be true genius. It seems that The American John "American" McCain Stands for America and the Americans of America by being the Most American. Oh, and he was a prisoner of war and looked good in black and white back then. This is, I guess, McCain's attempt to reintroduce himself to the electorate at large. I don't really think that plays at all outside the Republican base (where it isn't enough to overcome the general loathing that Xian conservatives have for him).

McCain has more negatives than any major party candidate in recent memory. He has tied himself rabidly to Mr. Bush's dirty little war and that alone is likely enough to doom his candidacy.

Leaving that aside, though, the economy is likely to be the major concern as we head into this election and McCain is incapable of understanding that. He freely admits to not understanding economic matters (and is brazenly flip about it). As if that weren't enough, when he does bother to talk about the housing crises, he takes the stance that the poor should learn to live with it or something. Honestly, his words on the subject are so lamentable that I can hardly begin to think how to describe his position.

Then there is the fact that he time and again throws ideals overboard for the sake of political expediency. He did this on the Bush tax cuts, on torture, and on stance after stance. He can’t really be the maverick and go along to get along, but that’s exactly what he seems to be trying.

Then there is the ethics question. McCain is going to be eaten alive by the emerging stories about his ties to high power lobbyists. The Keating scandal is not done either. None of this would be quite as damaging were it not for McCain’s public persona.
