Nathan Tyree: The Olympians

I am no fan of the Olympics. Anyone who knows me, understands that I am largely ambivalent toward most sports anyway. Beyond that, the Olympics are problematic for social reasons. The ceremonies are often used by governments as an excuse to displace the poor and the homeless. Hosting the Olympic games can permanently damage a local economy. There's too much commercialism. Etc.

This year’s games are worse. Being in Beijing they are a massive advertisement for China. My feelings toward China are mixed. It is a nation with an ancient and beautiful culture that is currently lead by a regime with a terrifying record on human rights. By watching these Olympics, it could be argued, one is supporting that totalitarian regime. I want no part of it.

And yet, my strange libido sometimes gets the better of me. This morning I could not help being transfixed by Women’s Volleyball. It is Japan Vs. The United States. I don’t play the sport. I am not familiar with the rules. I don’t care who wins. I just want these beautiful young women to keep jumping and stretching.

In other news: I think Lit Up Magazine is going to publish Light of Infinite Stars. Lit Up hasn’t been around very long, but they rock. It’s a great magazine, and everyone should check them out.

In movie news: I finally got around to seeing I'm Not There. It was not at all what I expected. It is a very good film and I highly recommend it. INT contains a collection of great and varied performances, a beautiful soundtrack, and images that really stick.
